  John : Graceful Actor

Benefits of Being a Raw Foodist/Vegan

John said Aug 1, 2006, 6:42 PM:

In August 05 I was to get my tonsils out because I'm prone to strept throat. I was pretty scared of surgery as I heard many times that it was awful for an adult. I also had digestive problems that were getting worse over the past five years. I decided to read up on natural/holistic rememdies. Everything I was reading mentioned colonics for good health.

I found this Bio-Therapy Clinic and went for a free consultation. They diagnosed me with candida, which is an overgrowth of yeast in your body. They thought it was also causing my throat problems. They suggested their full body cleanse program. That consisted of 7 colonics in 7 weeks and this restrictive raw food diet. (vegetables, grains, nuts/fruit) I reluctantly agreed to try it out. It was pretty hard the first few days, but I adjusted. (Ever hear an MD mention candida?)  NO

I was allowed to eat meat, but it was a natural choice for me to give it up as I have become increasingly squirmish of chicken, etc over the years. I lost 30lbs within 4 weeks of going on this diet. Weight loss was NOT my goal at all.

It wasn't until December that I began to feel the full effects of the changes. I now undergo monthly colonics for maintenance and decided that I wanted to maintain a raw diet lifestyle. It's become much easier to eat, except in restaurants. I've learned a tremendous amount about food and how it works in your body. Things I had NEVER heard anyone say. You'd be surprised!

Candida is usually caused by bad diet,(white flour/sugar) and antibiotics. I was addicted to white flour. I gave up sugar in May 05.(except for natural/fruit) You can't ever fully get rid of candida, you can stop it's growth.

I drink lots of herbal tea, like fresh raw ginger, fresh lemon w/ cayenne pepper. I try to put raw garlic on top of my dinner. I get my protein from beans, nuts/seeds. It's become about making my body alkaline not acidic and less inflammation. There are foods that will make your body acidic and when that happens you are prone to getting sick. My mom visited for Christmas and got the flu and I never once got sick.

It's been an absolutely amazing change for me. I honestly have never felt better in my life. As I expected it also brought about a lot of other personal transformational changes as well. I'm very grateful and humbled!

Thanks for reading this far. I want to share my experience as hopefully it might speak to you.

In Peace ~

I really like what john has to say about being vegan/ raw food. I actually DID get my tonsils out for recurrent strep or recurrent something or other, but, I still get sore back there, and I know I have bad breath that has nothing to do with my teeth. But I am a busy single mom! Not much money or time to prepare or buy fancy food. It’s very hard just to eat well as things stand now, although I do. I don’t each much sugar, no soda, very little meat. I eat lots of fruit, some dairy (mainly cheese), some carbs like crackers, popcorn… I don’t really like the way excess carbs makes me feel - sort of full and confused and irritable, so I actually tend torwards higher protein diet. I also have scoliosis and I”m pretty athletic, so I can’t go without plenty of calcium-magnesium-zinc supplement, and protein helps me work out without fatigue. ideas?

Dear John,

Thank you SO MUCH for writing this!

It's everything I want to say to people, but when I do this they often say it's just not very realistic. They say; 'How can they give all this food up?' 'Sounds like there's nothing you CAN eat!' Or they don't believe the food - health relationship at all. I don't want to have all those heavy discussions, but I do want to keep on putting out the word - since changes helped me so much. I do agree with you that eating in restaurants becomes pretty impossible. And that may effect your social life. I try to solve that with cooking, but I end up cooking for everyone all the time. So I'm still working on the balance of incorporating!!

Maybe you wanne check out my food introduction blog; I think you already know all you need to know but there are some links, including one to a bookshelf about all of this, that you might find useful or interesting.

Big thanks again, I'm gonna add your story to everyone's reading lists!!!

Good luck,

Dree
